Song Lyric Sunday

Happy Sunday one and all – I hope that the sun is shining on you wherever you are and that you’ve had a great week! As usual, for me and many others, today is all about discovering new music and catching up with blogging friends new and old. Thanks to the lovely Jim over at A Unique Title For Me, we have a prompt each week which gives us the inspiration we need to share our favourite tracks – this week it’s Mom/Mother/Flowers. If you’d like to join in and I hope you will as it’s ‘the more, the merrier’, here are some rules for you:

  • Post the lyrics to the song of your choice, whether it fits the theme or not.
  • Please try to include the songwriter(s) – it’s a good idea to give credit where credit is due.
  • Make sure you also credit the singer/band and if you desire you can provide a link to where you found the lyrics.
  • Link to the YouTube video, or pull it into your post so others can listen to the song.
  • Ping back to this post will eventually work, as long as you are being patient, but you can also place your link in the comments if you don’t like to wait.
  • Read at least one other person’s blog, so we can all share new and fantastic music and create amazing new blogging friends in the process.
  • Feel free to suggest future prompts.
  • Have fun and enjoy the music.

My initial thought was to use ‘flower’ as a prompt but then two songs sprung to mind which I just had to share with you – both are a little bit weird which is probably why I love them ;O)

Mother, do you think they’ll drop the bomb?
Mother, do you think they’ll like this song?
Mother, do you think they’ll try to break my balls?
Ooh, aah, mother, should I build the wall?

Mother, should I run for president?
Mother, should I trust the government?
Mother, will they put me in the firing line?
Ooh, aah, is it just a waste of time?

Hush now, baby, baby, don’t you cry
Mama’s gonna make all of your nightmares come true
Mama’s gonna put all of her fears into you
Mama’s gonna keep you right here under her wing
She won’t let you fly but she might let you sing
Mama’s gonna keep baby cozy and warm

Ooh, babe, ooh, babe, ooh, babe
Of course mama’s gonna help build the wall

Mother, do you think she’s good enough for me?
Mother, do you think she’s dangerous to me?
Mother, will she tear your little boy apart?
Ooh, aah, mother, will she break my heart?

Hush now, baby, baby, don’t you cry
Mama’s gonna check out all your girlfriends for you
Mama won’t let anyone dirty get through
Mama’s gonna wait up ’til you get in
Mama will always find out where you’ve been
Mamma’s gonna keep baby healthy and clean

Ooh, babe, ooh, babe, ooh, babe
You’ll always be a baby to me

Mother, did it need to be so high?

This song is taken from the album The Wall which was, arguably,  the most innovative  of all time. It tells the story of a man who, in trying to deal with his mental health issues, builds a wall around himself and slowly descends into madness. I remember being fascinated with this album the first time I heard it and it holds a fascination for me still.

The second track I’ve chosen is Mama by Genesis.

I can’t see you mama
But I can hardly wait
Ooh to touch and to feel you mama
Oh I just can’t keep away
In the heat and the steam of the city
Oh its got me running and I just can’t brake
So say you’ll help me mama
Cos its getting so hard

Now I can’t keep you mama
But I know you’re always there
You listen, you teach me mama
And I know inside you care
So get down, down here beside me
Oh you ain’t going nowhere
No I won’t hurt you mama
But its getting so hard

Can’t you see me here mama
Mama mama mama please
Can’t you feel my heart
Can’t you feel my heart
Can’t you feel my heart oh
Now listen to me mama
Mama mama
You’re taking away my last chance
Don’t take it away
Can’t you feel my heart?

It’s hot, too hot for me mama
But I can hardly wait
My eyes they’re burning mama
And I can feel my body shake
Don’t stop, don’t stop me mama
Oh make the pain, make it go away
No I won’t hurt you mama
But its getting so hard

Now I can’t see you mama
But I know you’re always there
You taunt, you tease me mama
But I never never never can keep away
It’s the heat and the steam of the city
Oh got me running and I just can’t brake
So stay don’t leave me mama
Cos its getting so hard

I say that this song is weird simply because, to me,  it seems to be about a man with an Oedipus complex which I always thought was a strange subject . Saying that, it is an extremely powerful song and Phil Collins performance is intense, especially his devil laugh – you’ll get what I mean after you listen to it ;O)

Anyway, those are my choices for this week – I really hope that you like them and that you have a fantastic day!

The songs are truly great, dear Lisa! And VERY impressive! They made me think … about how we all have our problems, afraid of something, unsure about something. And how we all try to deal with it: sometimes by building walls mentally; sometimes by finding an escape – a safe place where the person whom we trust uttermost, can protect us and keep us safe.
    It’s a very fine balance.
Yes, of course we need walls and protection inside ourselves. Otherwise we would be hurt far too easy. But the question is: how do we keep them from growing too thick, too cold for comfort. How to learn when to shelter – and when to venture forth into the world outside.

Thank you very most indeed, dear Lisa, for your post! I really enjoyed reading your thoughts here, as well as listening to the music!
May your week be filled with inspiration, joy, and much love! :))
