Mark sat staring at the letter, wishing he could share the contents with someone but he knew it was impossible. he couldn’t tell, not yet. These few, short sentences could change his life forever; reading them over again he couldn’t suppress a squeal of delight, finally he had achieved something worthwhile. He couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of satisfaction when he thought about the look on his brother’s face when he shared the news with him; the black sheep at last coming good..

Mark had always played second fiddle to his younger brother Michael; he didn’t have his looks, charm, charisma, intelligence, wealth, confidence….Next to Michael he was, well, ordinary. He knew he shouldn’t complain and he really did love his little brother, he was just tired of living in his shadow but now he had the opportunity to step out into the light. After years spent slaving over coding and calculations, spending most of his meager salary on business courses and motivational seminars, he had managed to develop an App that he knew would revolutionise the fitness industry..

He had suffered for this, his route to wealth and success; Gina, his wife, had left him 6 months ago, sick to death of his obsession with the App and of living her life pretty much alone. He hadn’t had a holiday in 5 years, he had few friends and even his dog had gone to live with Gina because, as she said, he didn’t have the time to take care of it…

However, he could forget all that now, he was on his way! He sipped at the glass of wine by his side and sighed with contentment. He didn’t usually drink as alcohol was a luxury and he would usually waste money on luxuries when he could invest it in his dream but this was a special occasion so he’d splashed out £5.99 on a bottle of red

‘Hmm nice’ he thought to himself ‘maybe it will be champagne next time’

Marks’ thoughts drifted back to his little brother. He’d so wanted to tell him everything last month when he came over to visit but he’d held it all in, it would be worth to see the surprise on his face when he make the big announcement. Strangely it was Michael who had first given him the idea for the App; he owned a well-known chain of gyms and was always telling Mark about the ‘fat birds’ who paid a fortune to his trainers to help them shed their unwanted pounds. Michael had explained that the trainers gave the desperate women a programme that would help them burn off calories and a diet sheet that would make sure they didn’t eat more than they burnt off..

Mark had actually felt a bit sorry for the women, although he didn’t have the guts to say so to Michael; they were paying almost £200 a month and for what? Someone to tell them when to move and what to eat, surely he could come up with a cheaper solution..and that was when he had the idea for the App. There was nothing else like it on the market, he honestly believed it would change the fitness industry for good

“I’m going to be rich” he stood up and whirled around like a child, clutching his letter and grinning like a maniac

“MC Fatbuster” he said the words out loud “Mark Cain my man, you are going to be famous”

He wasn’t sure about the name, using his initials felt a bit like blowing his own trumpet but the marketing guy he’d hired (at £200 an hour, he still shuddered at the thought), had insisted that the name was perfect so he’d gone with it.

Sitting back down to take another sip of his wine and enjoy his solitary celebration, he switched on the TV.

‘Oh God not again’

It was another one of his brother’s adverts. Not short on confidence or attitude, Michael always fronted his own ad campaigns and his handsome face filled the screen.

“MC Gyms are sharing something new today and I’m telling you, you will love it!”

‘What now’ thought Mark ‘has he found another way to pry cash out of fat women’s fingers’

With a huge ‘taa daah’ his TV screen lit up with a blue and gold logo and the words:

“MC Fatbuster”

His brother’s voice rang out loud and clear

“We bring you the Michael Cain Fatbuster App….”

That was when Mark turned the TV off and looked back at his letter, it said patent pending

This little story was inspired by Fandango and his one word prompt – I absolutely love them! Why not have a go yourself ;O)

Well if he is spending all his time and money on his obsession, he deserves it.

I feel sorry for Mark. How did Michael find out about the app. Was it the £200/hr marketing guy who was playing both ends against the middle? Fascinating tale.
