Song Lyric Sunday: Search

After a few days off, spent in sunny England (yep you heard right; warm, sunny and no rain at all!) I’m back just in time for Song Lyric Sunday. Brought to us by the warm and sunny Helen , it’s our weekly chance to share great music and make new friends so why not play along?

Here are the rules:

  • Post the lyrics to the song of your choice, whether it fits the theme or not
  • Please try to include the songwriter(s) – it’s a good idea to give credit where credit is due and it’s honestly just a simple Google search
  • Make sure you also credit the singer/band and provide a link to where you found the lyrics
  • Link to the YouTube video, or pull it into your post so others can listen to the song
  • Ping back to this post or my own Song Lyric Sunday post
  • Read at least one other person’s blog so we can all share new and fantastic music and create amazing new blogging friends in the process

Normally I have no trouble thinking of a song but this was really, really tricky. The song I’ve come up with is a bit of a stretch but it’s beautiful and I love it so what the heck :O)

The wounds on your hands never seem to heal
I thought all I needed was to believe
Here am I, a lifetime away from you
The blood of Christ, or the beat of my heart
My love wears forbidden colours
My life believes
Senseless years thunder by
Millions are willing to give their lives for you
Does nothing live on?
Learning to cope with feelings aroused in me
My hands in the soil, buried inside of myself
My love wears forbidden colours
My life believes in you once again
I`ll go walking in circles
While doubting the very ground beneath me
Trying to show unquestioning faith in everything
Here am I, a lifetime away from you
The blood of Christ, or a change of heart
My love wears forbidden colours
My life believes
My love wears forbidden colours
My life believes in you once again
Songwriters: David Sylvian / Ryuichi Sakamoto
This song is from the film Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence which told the story of life, loss and friendship in a Japanese prisoner of war camp. I went to see it because David Bowie was playing one of the lead characters and I was, and still am, a huge fan. I didn’t really expect to like the film to be honest but it was incredible; brutal and violent in parts but also touching and very sad in others.
My choice today is the title song and it captures everything that made this film so special. For me it tells of a man who is desperately searching for the faith that he once had to carry him through a time of unimaginable suffering. The line:
“I`ll go walking in circles
While doubting the very ground beneath me”
has stayed with me ever since I first watched the film which was some 30 odd years ago. These words struck a chord with me, for their depth and beauty, and I have never forgotten them.
I hope that you enjoy this as much as I do and have a wonderful Sunday!

    Lisa,

I don’t know either the song or movie. The film doesn’t sound like something I’d enjoy. I tend to veer away from war type features. These sorts of dramas pain my heart too much to watch. The song has a tenderness to it which captivated my ear. Thanks for the introduction. Have a songsational Sunday!

Interesting choice. I can’t say that I am familiar with either the song or the movie. One of the things I enjoy about these type of blog hops is that I always learn something new…
