Song Lyric Sunday

Happy Sunday everyone :O) Well I don’t know what happened to that week, do you? So, here we are again, it’s time for Song Lyric Sunday; if you haven’t joined in before why not have a go this week, it’s fun! The brainchild of the lovely Helen Vahdati; we are prompted each week to come up with a song that, for us, best encapsulates the word for the day which, this week, is ‘games‘.

If you’d like to play along, here are the rules:

  • Post the lyrics to the song of your choice, whether it fits the theme or not
  • Please try to include the songwriter(s) – it’s a good idea to give credit where credit is due and it’s honestly just a simple Google search
  • Make sure you also credit the singer/band and provide a link to where you found the lyrics
  • Link to the YouTube video, or pull it into your post so others can listen to the song
  • Ping back to this post or my own Song Lyric Sunday post
  • Read at least one other person’s blog so we can all share new and fantastic music and create amazing new blogging friends in the process

So here’s mine for this week and it’s Wicked Games which was written and performed by Chris Isaak:

This song opens with a guitar riff which is both haunting and sublime; it is the relaxing sound of a summer night laying in a hammock looking at the stars combined with notes of heartbreak and loss.

Issak’s voice is, at first, deep, soft and caressing; he is speaking intimately to someone he is falling deeply in love with.  It then soars through the octaves and you start to hear his pain; he knows that the object of his affection will hurt him and he is desperate not to fall further.

He gives us the impression that he is helpless, cannot control his feelings and so he blames the focus of his attention, accusing them of playing ‘wicked games’ and then almost of cruelty with the line:

“What a wicked thing to say, you never felt this way”.

As the song moves on you can feel him being torn between his desire and the pain that he knows he will, inevitably suffer. He wants to fall in love but a voice is telling him that, if he does, his heart will be broken. The very last line suggests that whether he falls or not it will make no difference as ‘nobody loves no-one’.

This is one of my favourite songs so I really hope that you enjoy it, here are the lyrics if you want to sing along:

The world was on fire and no one could save me but you.
It’s strange what desire will make foolish people do.
I never dreamed that I’d meet somebody like you.
And I never dreamed that I’d lose somebody like you.

No, I don’t want to fall in love (this girl is only gonna break your heart)
No, I don’t want to fall in love (this girl is only gonna break your heart)
With you, with you (this girl is only gonna break your heart)

What a wicked game you play to make me feel this way.
What a wicked thing to do, to let me dream of you.
What a wicked thing to say, you never felt this way.
What a wicked thing to do, to make me dream of you

And I wanna fall in love (this girl is only gonna break your heart)
No, I wanna fall in love (this girl is only gonna break your heart)
With you.

The world was on fire and no one could save me but you.
It’s strange what desire will make foolish people do.
I never dreamed that I’d love somebody like you.
And I never dreamed that I’d lose somebody like you,

No, I wanna fall in love (this girl is only gonna break your heart)
No, I wanna fall in love (this girl is only gonna break your heart)
With you (this girl is only gonna break your heart)
With you (this girl is only gonna break your heart)
No, I… (this girl is only gonna break your heart)
(this girl is only gonna break your heart)

Nobody loves no one.

Have a great Sunday everyone :O)
